Dr. Philip Palmedo
Angel Investor, Serial Entrepreneur

Dr. Philip Palmedo has had careers in physics, entrepreneurship, and corporate and financial management. He received his undergraduate degree from Williams College and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from MIT. His work as a physicist was carried out at the French nuclear laboratory at Saclay, and at Brookhaven National Laboratory. At Brookhaven he also worked on national energy policy issues and in the 1970s served with the Energy Policy Office in the White House.

After leaving Brookhaven, Mr. Palmedo founded and was Chairman of the International Resources Group (IRG), an international consultancy in energy, natural resources and economic development, until its sale in 2008. IRG systematically encouraged sustainability in the energy systems of developing countries. Mr. Palmedo designed and was the first President of the Long Island Research Institute formed by Brookhaven National Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and Stony Brook University to facilitate the commercialization of technologies. In 1988 Mr. Palmedo joined in the formation of Kepler Financial Management, Ltd., a quantitative financial research and trading company. He was President and Managing Director until 1991 when Renaissance Technologies Corporation acquired the company.

Mr. Palmedo served on the boards of Asset Management Advisors (now GenSpring) and EHR Investments. He also served on the Board of Trustees of Williams College and of the Stony Brook (University) Foundation and chaired the Foundation’s Investment Committee. He currently serves on the Boards of the Gyrodyne Corporation of America, IRG-Carbon, and Lixte Biotechnology Holdings, and is an advisor to several early-stage companies.

Throughout his careers, Mr. Palmedo has written and published in a variety of venues. Over the last several years, his primary subject has been modern sculpture. His most recent book, on the kinetic sculptor Lin Emery, was published by Hudson Hills Press in late 2011.
